But in opposite ways. Was in mainstreaming classes but I taught my friends ASL and we cheated throughout high school supporting each other due to sports activities or difficulty in the classes. Teachers did not realize til senior year! Finally, our teacher announced during the tests, "Put books away, no talking, NO ASL!" LOL!
Keep up with your wonderful stories. I have a few already with my CODA daughter! Aint brave being on VLOGS yet! :) But you guys are inspiring! Realistic within the administrational rules, I don't know, as per hearing loss level. But if I had my way and was superintendent of a Deaf school, I would open the gates to all CODA to flood our schools.

Thinking? To allow CODAs to attend the same schools as their Deaf brothers and sisters and to attend the same school their parents went to. CODAs are part of the family.

Who saYS? Keep it up!!

We have 3 CODA kids. First one is 8 years old boy, 2nd one is 4; girl and last one is 2 and also girl. :o) There is school called MILES ELC in Tucson Arizona where my son attend as 2nd grader. The program called Co-enrollment. The program is provided the students (deaf, hearing and CODA) to recieve education that are using ASL and Spoken/Written English in their classrooms. My son really love that school and he does not feeling any difference like he did at his preschool (regular like public school). He has several CODA, signers and deaf friends to hang with at school. All teachers plus parents are very familiar with ASL and deaf culture which are helpful for me and my husband. We do not have to use any pen and paper to communicate or not have anyone feel awkward being around us. We usually able to communicate with students from k-8 plus some of their parents who know signs and staff/faculty. Whenever we have the parent conferences or events at MILES. We never call in for the interpreter requests. They always provide one at every of their events or meetings. It is nice feelin. We feel so forunate that we have that kind of education for our son. I am not sure if MILES is an unique school that has "co-enrollment" (Bi-BI version?) program. The parents have to apply the forms for their kids to enroll at MILES. It is not easy to be qualified ones at MILES.

Unforunately about that program is that we just learned that MILES staff/faculty are no longer making the decision on who should enroll the program. In the past, MILES always put DEAF student as their first priority and CODA as their second priority. Right now, Tucson Unified School DIstrict are making the final decisions on who are accepted being enroll at MILES due to precent of prejudiced. They would not look at CODA kids as their 2nd priority. Many of my Deaf friends, who have the hearing young kids, want to put theirs in that program are not accepted. My both daughters would be be able in that school just because of my son. I dont know what it called but it is because of their being silbings with my son.
I strongly believe that CODA should be enroll that program as deaf/HH students as their top priority than any of students who live in the areas near by MILES. The education benefits CODA to able acquire both language. Once they learn both languages at same time therefore they could easily translate both language for their education sake. It also benefits for deaf students to interact with CODA easily during their Kindergarden level. SOrry I could go BLAH BLAH... but hope you find that the program is also agreeable for CODA's education.
LJDeckerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-81443574265819349342008-01-20T15:19:00.000-08:002008-01-20T15:19:00.000-08:00Hello Olson Brothers =0) Love your stories and lov...Hello Olson Brothers =0)
Love your stories and love to watch your vlogs. Anyway My hearing son asked me if he could go to minnesota school for deaf school last year. I asked him why he want go to deaf school ?. He said that he like the way his sister's lifestyle at the school like live at the dorm ,etc and he said there is alot of disability kids get to go to public school today. I told him that i see but i can imagination if they allow you enroll school there with your sister then you and your sister will be very mischievous together like you two always do at home when your sister come home from school on the weekend sometime. He laughed at me, then he again asked me do I ever think the deaf school will ever allow CODA kids enroll school someday ? I told him that I believe that it will happen one of these days if the people work together like tell the world that deaf school have same education as in public school expect all teacher and staff use American Sign Language so I don't see there is anything wrong for CODA kids want enroll deaf school. Please keep post more vlogs as possible, So the world can learn what it is like grow up with deaf parents and the language you two use as ASL , so that way it will show them that ASL is not bad language or lack of education.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-78932842895141121862008-01-18T22:46:00.000-08:002008-01-18T22:46:00.000-08:00Since you mentioned about CODA and Deaf school, I...Since you mentioned about CODA and Deaf school, I do think that CODA should have some opportunities to particpate in some programs in deaf school but they will be better off in public school though..

Now I have a question to ask you as CODA brothers, What do you think of KODA get-together? Do you think that CODA would be better people to handle KODA get-together??

I was trying to get KODA thing started up here in Knoxville but as a Deaf parent, I feel that I am not the perfect person to spearhead the activities so I asked CODA's around the community and they thought it was good idea but to my surprise, they do not want to step up and get it started. I am willing to work in background helping them. I thought it was unfortunate for this to happen..*~ Li ~*~ La ~*~ Lo ~*http://www.blogger.com/profile/11115027221780570331noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-29505125564382062162008-01-18T09:18:00.000-08:002008-01-18T09:18:00.000-08:00(I am laughing at your education coda). For Coda yo...(I am laughing at your education coda).

For Coda your questions,

one of my deaf residental school was used to allow a hearing student or coda in their school for one semester or one year to learn their deaf education/culture.Jacnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-84265003635754323942008-01-18T08:07:00.000-08:002008-01-18T08:07:00.000-08:00I believe it will benefit for CODA to take few cla...I believe it will benefit for CODA to take few classes at Deaf School such as PE, Deaf History, maybe English so that way Deaf students exposured by Hearing student with their english to develop better understanding in both worlds.
I think NMSD (New Mexico School for the Deaf) did something like that in the past and those CODA who went to NMSD had the best experiences.
I know it is hard to gt all CODA students to be in Deaf School because the fund Deaf School get is for DEAF students (with "special needs" whatever they call it).DeafKathy (Wilson)http://www.blogger.com/profile/07238025570673384426noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-25904804650779960832008-01-18T06:19:00.000-08:002008-01-18T06:19:00.000-08:00no thank you! as a coda i'm grateful i didn't go t...no thank you! as a coda i'm grateful i didn't go to deaf school.

could you imagine the exprish of growing up in a dorm situation?

it's the same for hearing or deaf in dorms. lots of violence, lots of inappropriate touching [even same sex!], lots of devil children behavior.

i never would have made it to class! too much fun...

HA!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-20127791991513594572008-01-18T00:06:00.000-08:002008-01-18T00:06:00.000-08:00Funny stories. The past of years ago, It is one of ...Funny stories.

The past of years ago, It is one of incident that my daughters and one of her friend, Seago's 2nd child. Actually, all three of my kids do know some signs but don't sign like you two do, unfortunately. But they can read signs.
Anyway, back to my youngest son, he has been in the baseball league (Little League, Jr. Babe Ruth), his teammates always ask him how to sign the swear words since he only knew only a couple of them until now. Of course more new words that he would pass on to his next team and possible high school baseball team if he can make the try out soon. At the games, he'd cuss in signs behind the umpires' backs but I caught him while nobody caught on. I glared at him and beckoned him over so I could give him a lecture. His coach came over and asked what was he signing to that umpire. I couldn't tell him because I'd die of embarrassment if I blurted out the word that a letter started with "A". That's how his teammates begged him to teach them to use that signs. Of course out of my sight because he knew I would yank him out and give him a lecture about respect, etc.
How did he learn those words? Of course from his brother and sister who are 10 and 7 years older than he. Feh....
At school, some friends learn a few signs but mostly his girlfriend learns a lot of signs from me and him as well.

Misha :DMishanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9042015333410392624.post-700767241017749232008-01-17T16:44:00.000-08:002008-01-17T16:44:00.000-08:00love your stories, especially the switching betwee...love your stories, especially the switching between two of you in storytelling! fun to watch! and plenty of laughter, too!

re: your question, should CODA kids be allowed to enroll Deaf Schools? what a fun change of topic to debate on! ha.

My answer: YES. imagine the advantage we, deaf kids, could have using CODA kids to listen in on houseparents for us and inform us when they are coming so we can play all night! haha, just kidding about "using." yes, coda kids can play, too and we'll take turns to be on look-out!

keep new vlogs coming!brenster-noreply@blogger.com
